What "same-day" actually means at UNO.
We're not a 24/7 ER — but every Mon–Wed we're open until 8:30 PM, and Thu–Fri until 5 PM. If you call before 4 PM on a weekday with a real dental emergency, we will almost always see you the same day. Outside those hours, we return urgent messages within an hour.
Pain that should be seen today.
Severe throbbing tooth pain. A tooth knocked out or pushed out of position. A crown or bridge that came off mid-meal. Visible swelling on the face or jawline. A broken tooth with a sharp edge cutting your tongue. Sudden sensitivity that doesn't ease in 30 minutes. If any of these describes today — call us before painkillers wear off.
How to prepare for your same-day visit.
Take a clear photo of the tooth. Note when the pain started and what makes it worse (cold, pressure, lying down). Bring an ID and insurance card. If a crown or filling fell out, put it in a clean container and bring it — we can often re-cement the original.

Do you charge an emergency fee?
No — the emergency visit is billed as a standard limited exam plus any imaging needed. We give you a written estimate before any treatment, and we verify your insurance in real time.
What if my emergency is after 8:30 PM?
Call us anyway — we monitor messages and will call you back. For life-threatening swelling that affects breathing or vision, go to the nearest ER (UCSF and Saint Francis are closest).
Can I be sedated for a same-day emergency?
Yes — we offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation for same-day visits, including extractions. Tell the front desk on the phone so we can prepare.
