Eating after an extraction — what's actually safe.
The first 24 hours matter most. Here's a simple, honest guide to what to eat (and what not to) — and a link to the full aftercare instructions.
First 2 hours — nothing.
Keep gauze in place, bite gentle pressure. The clot is forming. Eating or drinking dislodges it and slows healing.
Hours 2–24 — soft and cold.
Greek yogurt, smoothies (no straw — suction breaks the clot), applesauce, scrambled eggs, mashed avocado, cottage cheese, lukewarm broth. Cold helps the swelling. Avoid hot, crunchy, or seedy food.
Days 2–7 — gradually broaden.
Add soft pasta, fish, well-cooked vegetables. Chew on the opposite side. Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals. Brush carefully around the area.
What to avoid for 7 days.
Straws, smoking, alcohol, vigorous rinsing, spitting hard, hot drinks, popcorn, nuts, chips, and anything that requires aggressive chewing.
Common questions.
What if the clot falls out (dry socket)?
Severe pain 2–4 days post-op is the typical sign. Call us — we can place a medicated dressing the same day.
When can I eat normally?
Most patients eat normally by day 7. Implant placements take a little longer.
Should I take pain medicine before eating?
Ibuprofen + acetaminophen on schedule works for most. We send you home with a written plan.
