Same-day care

Abscess and extraction in one visit?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no — and it depends on whether the abscess is draining, how much swelling is present, and whether antibiotics need a few days to bring the infection down first.

When same-day extraction is safe.

If the abscess has drained on its own, the swelling is localized, and there's no spreading infection in the jaw or face, we can usually extract the same day with local anesthesia. Many patients prefer this — one visit, one recovery.

When we wait 3–5 days first.

If swelling is significant, if you have a fever, or if the infection is tracking into the surrounding tissue, we prescribe antibiotics first. Anesthesia doesn't work as well in infected tissue, and waiting reduces the risk of complications. We re-evaluate in 3–5 days.

What the visit looks like.

Limited exam, focused X-ray (or 3D CBCT if needed), discussion of options, and either the extraction itself with same-day temporary if needed — or a prescription, a written treatment plan, and a follow-up appointment locked in before you leave.

Common questions.

Will I be in pain after?

Most patients describe the next 24–48 hours as dull and manageable with ibuprofen. Aftercare is in our resources section.

Can a temporary tooth go in the same day?

For front teeth, usually yes — we can place a same-day temporary so you don't leave with a gap. Back teeth heal under the gum and don't need an immediate replacement.

Is sedation an option?

Yes — nitrous or oral conscious sedation. Talk to us when you call so we can prepare.
