Sedation dentistry

Sedation at a corporate chain vs. a boutique practice.

People searching this question are usually weighing options. Here's a fair comparison of what to expect from a national chain versus a small independent practice — written from the boutique side.

What chains usually offer.

Most large dental chains offer nitrous oxide. Some offer oral conscious sedation. IV sedation is less common and typically tied to specific locations or visiting anesthesiologists. Their pricing tends to be standardized across locations, which can mean predictable cost but limited customization.

What a boutique practice tends to do differently.

Longer appointment blocks (often a full hour for a new patient), the same clinician through every visit, more time discussing options, and a more personal handoff if specialist sedation is needed. Cost-wise, a boutique practice is usually not cheaper — you're paying for time and continuity.

What UNO offers.

Nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, in-house. For IV sedation or general anesthesia, we refer to an oral surgeon we trust. The goal is matching the level of sedation to the actual procedure — not maximizing what we can bill.

Common questions.

Is sedation safer at one type of office than the other?

Safety is about clinician training and monitoring, not corporate structure. Ask any office: who administers, what's their training, what monitoring equipment is in the room.

Can I get general anesthesia for a single filling?

Generally not appropriate. Anxiety can almost always be managed with nitrous or oral sedation — both have much lower risk than general.

What if I want a second opinion?

Always welcome — we'll send you the records. A good office encourages it.
