Opalescence PF 15% — how long to wear.
A specific question with a specific answer. Here's the simple wear schedule, plus what to do if sensitivity flares.
Standard wear time.
Opalescence PF 15% carbamide peroxide is rated for 4 hours per session, or overnight. Most patients tolerate overnight wear well. Two weeks of nightly use produces a typical 4–6 shade change.
If sensitivity flares.
Switch to 2-hour sessions during the day. Use a potassium nitrate toothpaste (Sensodyne) for the duration of treatment. Take a day off between sessions if needed. Don't push through severe sensitivity — it can damage enamel.
What we recommend at UNO.
Start with 1-hour sessions for the first 3 days, then move to 4-hour or overnight if tolerated. We follow up at the 2-week mark to evaluate.
Common questions.
Is overnight wear safe?
For most patients, yes. Custom-fit trays prevent gel migration onto the gums.
How many tubes will I need?
A typical 2-week course uses 4–6 tubes of 1.2g.
Does it work on crowns or veneers?
No — porcelain doesn't whiten. We plan whitening before crown or veneer placement so the new restorations match the brightened shade.
