Dental sedation — plainly explained.
"Sedation" covers a spectrum from very mild to fully unconscious. Most dental sedation is on the mild end. Here's what each level actually means.
Level 1 — minimal sedation.
Nitrous oxide. Light relaxation, fully responsive, no after-effects. Wears off within minutes. You drive yourself home.
Level 2 — moderate sedation.
Oral conscious sedation. Drowsy, slurred speech, may not remember details, still responsive to verbal cues. 4–6 hour duration. You need a ride home.
Level 3 — deep sedation.
IV sedation. May drift in and out of consciousness, may not respond to verbal cues. Requires specialist training and monitoring. Not offered in-house at UNO — we refer to an oral surgeon.
Level 4 — general anesthesia.
Fully unconscious. Used for complex oral surgery in a surgical center, not a regular dental office.
Common questions.
Which level is right for me?
Depends on the procedure and your anxiety. For most cleanings and fillings, no sedation is needed. For surgery or severe anxiety, moderate sedation usually does the trick.
Is the deeper sedation safer?
No — the deeper the sedation, the higher the risk and the more monitoring required. Mild sedation has the best safety profile.
Can I switch levels mid-appointment?
Yes — we can add nitrous on top of local anesthesia if you feel tense. We check in regularly.
